I heard this guy on my drive home from school today on the radio and I could not get over his life. John Corcoran, a college graduate and retired teacher, could not read, write, or spell until his late 40s! He taught high school for over 17 years. When I finally got home, I googled him and found this article on his life. It truly is amazing. Has anyone ever heard of him before or read any of his books? Very interesting stuff. Let me know your thoughts.

Mark, this was an amazing story. I had not heard of him before. It truly exemplifies the saying "where there's a will, there's a way". He found ways to get through school to compensation for his illiteracy. I applaud him for taking a step toward literacy at such a late age and for telling the world his story. I guess back then there were no required standardized tests and his athletic ability helped him persevere in high school. This also occurred, to an extent, when I went to high school some 35 years ago. It's hard to believe that he taught. I guess you can do anything if you put your mind and efforts to it, including compensating for a "disability". Illiteracy is like child abuse and neglect. We must promote literacy for all. It's vital to each individual, our communities and to society.
Wow!
What a story.
Remember this when you think a student is doing "fine". Is he really? How can we detect the severity of problems?
Thanks for the posting!
